MONTANA RIDERS CLEAN UP HOMESTAKE PASS RECREATION
AREA
OHV volunteers pick up a half ton of
garbage as part of the Take Pride in America program
One hundred and eighteen ATV and
off-highway motorcycle riders from across the state
braved the unpredictable summer weather on Saturday June
26th to pick up over a half a ton of garbage from the
campsites, parking areas, roads, and trails in the Homestake
Pass area. Most of the trash was removed from the
Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. The area is just a
few miles from Butte, Montana and is extremely popular for
camping, fishing, hiking, hunting and off-highway vehicle
riding. The trail riders removed every thing from gum
wrappers to car tires over the course of the day. The trash
bags for the event and the barbeque afterwards were provided
by Redline Motor Sports, the Honda motorcycle and ATV dealer
from Butte. The OHV volunteers were organized by
the Montana Trail Vehicle Riders Association (MTVRA).
The event was part of the broader “Take
Pride in America” program. This is a national program
with over one hundred agencies and organizational partners.
The goal of the program is to get all Americans sharing in
the responsibility of protecting our public lands by
providing skills, resources and volunteer labor.
Prizes were awarded for the riders who
collected the most trash throughout the day. The winner
was Mike Slevin from West Yellowstone, Montana with 37 bags
of trash. Mike has become very experienced at trail
clean-up since he started his one-man volunteer trash
clean-up program in the West Yellowstone area called Trail
Trash Recovery and Recycling Project. Mike pulls a modified
utility trailer behind his ATV to recover trash left behind
by others. So far this year Mike has picked up several tons
of trash from along 65 miles of roads and trails on public
lands around West Yellowstone.
